Drip irrigation systems, compared

Drip irrigation puts water at the root instead of over the leaf, and it is the only watering method on this site that does not suit a lawn at all — it suits everything around one. The shelf sells systems, and the unit of purchase is the starter set: a pressure reducer, a length of supply tube, a quantity of drippers or a run of porous hose, and the fittings to join them. What decides the purchase is the type. A soaker or porous hose weeps along its whole length and suits a row or a hedge. A micro-drip system feeds individual emitters, each one at a plant, and suits pots and beds where the plants are not in a line. Sets here are sold for « 30 plants », « 25 m of hedge » or « 50 m of shrubs », which is the coverage column, and mixing the two approaches on one line is normal. Two technical details are not optional and the sets include them for a reason. The pressure reducer, because mains pressure blows drippers off the tube — these systems run at around one bar, not four. And the tube diameter, 13 mm for the supply line and 4,6 mm for the spurs, which is the pair every accessory in the range is made for: buying a second brand’s parts is where an afternoon disappears. The flow per dripper, in litres per hour, is what a listing should publish and about half do. The connection is a tap fitting, and this is the family that most rewards a timer on the tap.
