A dandelion in a lawn is a taproot, and a tool that breaks it off at soil level has achieved nothing — the plant regrows, often as two. That single fact defines this shelf: every product here is judged on whether it brings the root out whole. Two designs do it. The hand weeder is a narrow forked blade on a short handle, worked down beside the root and levered — precise, cheap, and used kneeling. The long-handled root puller is the shelf’s real proposition: a metre-long shaft with three or four claws that are pushed into the turf with a footplate, twisted, and pulled, taking a plug and the root with it. The corpus shows both, from 39 cm hand tools to 100 cm standing ones. The mechanism is where the standing tools differ from one another: the good ones have an ejector — a sleeve pushed down by the thumb that drops the plug and the weed off the claws without touching it — and the ones without it require bending down to pull each weed off by hand, which removes the entire reason for buying a long-handled tool. The head design decides what it works in: three claws in loose soil, four in compacted turf, and a narrow V-blade for weeds in paving joints, which is a different job.
