Atmospheric pressure caps how far any surface pump can lift water, and the practical ceiling is somewhere around ten metres before the physics gives out. Nine is close to it.
That matters in exactly one situation, and it is a common one: drawing from a cistern, a well or a deep tank. If the water sits eight metres below the pump, a machine rated at seven will not start whatever its flow figure says. This is the pump on this shelf that will.
The only listing here that answers the question people actually have.
It is a rule of thumb rather than a measurement — it depends on which sprinklers, what hose and how far — and nothing behind it is standardised. It is still more useful than a head figure to somebody trying to work out whether one pump will run their garden.

Because atmospheric pressure sets a hard ceiling on how far any pump can lift water by suction, and 9 m is close to it. A pump rated at 7 m will not draw from a cistern whose water sits 8 m down, whatever its flow figure says.
The maker’s statement of how many sprinklers the pump will supply at once. It is a rule of thumb rather than a measured figure — it depends on the sprinklers, the hose and the layout — and it is still the most directly useful sentence on this shelf.
