Mulch when the lawn is short and dry, collect when it is long, wet, or full of seed heads. Most gardens want both over a season, which is why so many machines offer the switch.
What mulching actually is
Cutting the clippings small enough and often enough that they drop into the sward and disappear. It works because a maintained lawn produces very little material at each cut, and because clippings are mostly water.
What it returns to the lawn is real — the nutrients that were in the leaf go back — but modest and slow. It is not a substitute for a feed, and a fertiliser listing that says it is has made a claim this site does not repeat.
What it saves is the stops. No catcher to empty, nothing to carry to a heap, and no heap.
When it fails
Long grass. Too much material, and it lands on the surface as rows rather than falling in.
Wet grass. Clumps, which sit there and yellow the lawn underneath within a few days.
The first cut of the season, which is both of the above.
Seed heads and leaves in autumn, which are not lawn material and do not break down in a season.
What a mulching plug changes
It closes the discharge so the clippings recirculate. That is the mechanical half. The other half — whether they are cut small enough to disappear — belongs to the blade profile and the deck shape, and a plug changes neither.
A machine designed to mulch has a deck shaped to hold material in circulation under the blade. A machine with a plug fitted has a closed chute. Both are sold under the same word, and that word has its own page here.

The mulching kit shelf lists machine-specific hardware, and every page names the machines the maker names, because a wedge from another deck does not fit. The mower pages state which discharge options the deck offers and print the maker’s own count — 2-in-1, 3-in-1 — as a configuration count rather than a quality claim.

Does mulching cause thatch?
Clippings are mostly water and they break down quickly; thatch is built from stem and root material, not from leaf. A lawn that thatches is thatching for other reasons, and the scarifier shelf here is about that.
Can I mulch a wet lawn?
Poorly. Wet clippings clump and sit on the surface rather than falling into the sward, and a mulching deck has nowhere to put them. On a wet cut, collecting is the better of two imperfect options.
