Lawn shears cut the grass a mower cannot reach: the strip against a wall, the collar around a tree, the lip over a path edge. The shelf has three forms and they are used in different postures. Grass shears have horizontal blades on a pistol grip, held low and squeezed with one hand — the classic tool for trimming a lawn edge on your knees. Edging shears have vertical blades on long handles, used standing up along a path, and are the faster tool on a long straight edge. And a small cordless shear, of which the corpus holds one, does the same work with a motor and is really a different purchase. The feature that separates a good pair from a tiring one is the rotation: a head that turns through 90° or a full 360° lets the same tool cut horizontally along a lawn and vertically down an edge without twisting the wrist, and it is the single most useful thing on this shelf. The blade length sets how much is cut per squeeze — longer blades on the edging shears, shorter and thicker on the hand ones — and the grind matters: a wavy edge grips grass instead of pushing it away, which is why several of these advertise it. The handle and the weight decide everything else, because this is a tool used for twenty minutes continuously: a non-stick coating on the blades stops sap building up, and a spring return means the hand only does half the work.
