Lawn edging, compared

Lawn edging is a physical barrier between grass and whatever the grass is trying to grow into, and it does two jobs that are worth separating. It stops rhizomes creeping into a bed — that requires depth, and a strip that stands proud of the soil without going into it does nothing at all. And it gives the mower a defined edge to run against, which saves the strimming pass that otherwise follows every cut. The shelf divides on material. Galvanised steel and Corten come in lengths of a few metres, are stiff enough to hold a curve, and cost several times what plastic does. Plastic edging is sold in rolls up to 9 or 10 m, is flexible enough for tight curves, and is the type that lifts out of the ground over a few winters. The height is quoted as a total — 14, 15, 18, 20 cm — and the useful question is how much of it goes below ground: an 18 cm strip buried 15 cm deep leaves a 3 cm lip, which is the geometry that both blocks roots and lets a mower wheel ride over it. The fixing is what fails first: pegs driven through the strip, or ground anchors, and the number supplied per metre is the figure to compare. The form column covers the profile — flat strip, wavy palisade, rolled top edge — and the rolled top is not decoration: a sharp-cut steel edge at ankle height beside a lawn is a hazard, and the makers who fold it say so.
