The stand-up tool

This is the shelf’s answer to spiked shoes, and the listing knows it — its second feature line spends most of its length arguing against them.

The real difference is not the argument, it is the geometry.

A shoe makes its holes where your foot lands. Coverage is a walking pattern and it is honestly quite hard to be even about it.

This makes fifteen holes in a defined block wherever you set it down, then you step back and set it down again. It is slower per square metre. It is much easier to be systematic with, and you can see what you have done.

That reaches through a normal thatch layer and into the top of the root zone, which is where a hand tool can realistically work. Powered equipment goes deeper; nothing you press in with your foot does.

Powder coating, not galvanising

Named in the listing, described as hard-wearing and rust-free.

Powder coat is a paint film. It is tough, it is not a sacrificial coating, and a chip in it is bare iron sitting in wet soil.

That is a real distinction on this shelf, where the cheapest item is galvanised — zinc that corrodes in place of the steel underneath, and keeps protecting it where the surface is scratched. On a tool whose working end is driven repeatedly into grit, the difference shows up in year three, not year one.

The tip nobody else gives

“If your soil is hard and dry, water your lawn first.”

That is the most useful sentence on the whole shelf.

Dry compacted clay resists a spike hard enough that the tool stops at two centimetres regardless of how much you weigh, and the usual conclusion is that the tool is bad. Watering the evening before softens the top layer and the same tool goes to full depth.

And what is missing

A working width.

Three rows of fifteen spikes occupy a definite area, and unlike a shoe or a handheld head, that area is the thing you would use to plan a lawn. It is not published.
