Four words that sellers avoid.
The commercial instinct on a parts shelf is to widen a compatibility list as
far as it can be defended — one length, forty machine names. This is the
opposite: a manufacturer naming two of its own machines and closing the door.
It costs sales. It prevents returns, and on a moulded part that has to seal a
specific discharge opening it is simply the truth.
What the listing gets right about mulching
Two sentences, and they are the best explanation on this shelf:
“In summer, mulch mowing protects against drying out.” Clippings left on
the surface shade the soil and slow evaporation. In a dry July that is a real
effect and it is the strongest practical argument for mulching.
“The small chopped clippings are pressed into the sward and supply the lawn
with organic nutrients.” True, and worth the qualifier this site adds
elsewhere: what returns is what was in the leaf — real, modest, and not a
substitute for a feed.
A wedge, not a kit
This is the plug alone.
At its price that is worth noticing, because two products on this shelf are a
plug and a mulching blade for not very much more, and one of those is only
about twice the cost.
What the blade adds is the other half of mulching. A plug makes clippings
recirculate; a mulching blade — more cutting edge, a lift profile that holds
material under the deck — is what chops them small enough to disappear.
A plug on a standard blade in a standard deck produces recirculated clippings
that are not always fine enough to fall in, which is what leaves rows on the
lawn.
Light plastic
Named, and it is the correct material: a wedge sits inside a deck in the
airstream, gets hit by clippings continuously, and has to be light enough not
to unbalance anything.
Four of the seven listings here publish no material at all.
