What the maker prints on its own page
A replacement aerating roller for the maker’s electric scarifier-aerators,
suitable for two named machines. It has 26 steel claws and a working width of
35 cm. The ball-bearing roller is stated as suited to aerating medium to larger
lawns of up to 500 m². With it, the surface of the lawn is scratched so water
drains better and oxygen uptake is easier. The roller to be replaced can be
removed with an Allen key and the replacement fitted; gloves should be worn.
Aerating, not scarifying
This matters and the listing is clear about it.
A scarifying roller carries fixed blades that cut vertically down through
the thatch layer and drag it out. A lawn with real thatch needs that, and the
result is a startling quantity of material and a lawn that looks wrecked for a
fortnight.
An aerating roller carries sprung claws that comb the surface, lifting
loose material and scratching the sward so water and air get in. It is gentler,
it removes far less, and on a lawn that is matted rather than thatched it is the
correct tool.
Most 2-in-1 machines take both. This is one of the two, and the page says
which.
A whole roller
Twenty-six claws on a ball-bearing shaft, sold as one assembly.
That is more expensive than a bag of loose blades and it includes the thing
that often fails first. A roller that rumbles, that has play in it, or that has
started to eat its housing has worn bearings, and no amount of new claws fixes
that.
The two sentences of instruction
“Remove with an Allen key. Wear gloves.”
A spare part listing that tells you how to fit the part is unusual on this
shelf. The gloves line is not decoration: a roller is a shaft covered in sharp
steel, and it has to be handled to be fitted.
The 500 m²
A maker’s statement of what the roller suits rather than a measurement. On a
hand-pushed electric machine, the real constraint is the afternoon rather than
the roller.
