The listing prints them in capitals and with a warning mark: original length
10 m, expandable length 30 m.
That is the right way to sell an expandable, and it is rarer than it should be
— most listings quote only the expanded figure and let the buyer discover the
other one.
Here the specification is honest: you store ten metres, you water with thirty,
and the change happens when you open the tap.
How an expandable works, and what that costs
A latex inner tube inside a loose woven sleeve. Water pressure stretches the
latex lengthwise; the sleeve limits the stretch; the hose grows to roughly
three times its length. Close the tap, the latex contracts, and it shrinks back
within minutes.
The advantages are real and they are all about handling. Ten metres of limp
hose on a hook, against thirty metres of coiled PVC on a reel. No coil memory.
No weight to drag when empty.
The cost is service life. A latex tube that stretches to three times its length
and back, several times a day, all season, is a fatigue part in a way a
braided PVC hose is not. No listing on this shelf publishes a service life,
including this one, and this page will not estimate one.
The other expandable on this shelf uses plastic connectors. This one uses
metal, and the listing leads with it.
That matters because of where these hoses fail.
Every time the tap goes off, the entire contraction force of thirty metres of
stretched latex pulls against the collar the core is bonded into. That joint is
the hardest-working part of the product, and a moulded plastic collar clamping
a latex tube is the classic weep point.
Metal takes the clamping load without creeping. It does not make the joint
eternal; it makes it the better of the two arrangements on this shelf.

It describes abrasion resistance — a heavier fibre, a tougher weave, a sleeve
that survives being pulled across a paving slab. It is a genuine specification
and it is worth having.
It is not a pressure rating, and this listing publishes no pressure rating of
any kind. On a product whose entire operating principle is water pressure
stretching a rubber tube, that is the gap.

The word this page will not use
The listing calls it a “magic” hose.
It is a latex tube in a fabric sleeve, and the mechanism is elastic
deformation. Describing it accurately is not less impressive than describing it
as magic — it is the reason the thing works, and the reason it wears out.
