Pulling, which is the actual argument
Most lawn rollers are pushed, and most lawns have edges.
A pushed drum stops where your arms stop, which is roughly a metre short of a
wall, a bed or a fence. Everything within that metre gets rolled at an angle,
or not at all.
Pulled, the drum leads and you follow. It reaches the boundary, it turns in its
own width, and it works along a narrow strip between a path and a border
without a three-point manoeuvre.
A U-handle that is comfortable in both directions is not a marketing line; it
is the difference between rolling a lawn and rolling the middle of one.
The rounded edges
Named as a feature, and it is a sensible one.
The end of a drum is where the damage happens. A square-cut rim is a blade
travelling under fifty kilos, and on a turn it cuts a crescent into the sward.
A rolled, rounded edge rides over instead.
Anyone who has turned a heavy roller too sharply on damp grass has seen the
alternative.
