A mower’s wheels set the deck level. Replacing one and leaving its worn partner
tilts the machine sideways by a few millimetres, which shows up as a cut that
is lower on one side of every pass — and which the owner then blames on the
blade.
Wheels are replaced in pairs, front or rear.
12.7 mm, which is half an inch
Worth noticing before ordering.
The wheels on this shelf are bored at 12 mm, at 12.7 mm, and by bush anywhere
from 8.2 to 15.8 mm. Those are not interchangeable — 0.7 mm of slop on an axle
is a wheel that wobbles and wears its own bore oval.
A half-inch axle points at an American-designed machine or a ride-on. Measure
the old one.
Rubber on polyurethane
Two materials named, and the combination is the good one.
A rubber tread grips wet grass and a paved path, and it runs quietly. A
moulded plastic tread is lighter and cheaper and skids on both. On a
self-propelled mower — where the rear wheels are the drive — the difference is
whether the machine pulls itself up a damp slope.
The polyurethane rim is the structural part, and it is tougher than the plastic
rims further down this shelf.
70 kg
The highest load rating here, and comfortably beyond what a domestic mower asks
of one wheel.
What a load rating does not cover is impact: a rim cracks when a wheel meets a
kerb or a root, and that is a different failure from a static overload.
