A two-litre sprayer with a safety valve — and a published dimension that cannot describe the product.
The dimension that cannot be right
The listing publishes one measurement: 49 × 38 × 41.5 cm, labelled as width,
height and depth.
A two-litre pressure sprayer is roughly 12 to 15 centimetres across the bottle
and 35 to 40 centimetres tall with the lance clipped on. Nothing about it is
49 centimetres wide.
Almost certainly that figure is a shipping carton, or a pallet layer, or an
outer of several units. The listing does not say, and this page is not going to
decide which — it reports that the only published dimension does not describe
the product.
It matters because it is the sort of number people use. Somebody checking
whether a sprayer fits a shelf reads that figure and concludes it will not.
The two parts that are worth having
A built-in safety valve. A lockable trigger.
Both are named, and both are the right things to name on a cheap sprayer.
The safety valve is a safety part rather than a convenience. A pumped
sprayer stays pressurised after you stop using it, and a pressurised bottle
unscrewed at the neck sprays its contents upward at whoever is holding it. That
is the accident this category has, and a valve you can vent before opening is
what prevents it. It also relieves over-pressure if somebody keeps pumping past
the stop.
The trigger lock is for the hand. A sprayer trigger is a spring, and holding
it for the length of a hedge is a genuine ache. Locked open, the sprayer runs
while you aim it, and you use it for longer than thirty seconds at a time.
Five of the seven sprayers on this shelf have a lock, which suggests the market
agrees.
The graduated tank
Marked in litres and fluid ounces.
That is what allows mixing to happen in the sprayer rather than in a jug —
fill to the line, add the measured dose, shake. Garden chemicals are dosed per
litre and a sprayer without markings means a second vessel and a guess.
Two sprayers on this shelf make a point of their scale. It is the cheapest
useful feature in the category.
What goes unpublished
No pressure. Four of the seven listings here omit it, and it is the
specification of a pressure sprayer. The three that publish one give up to 3
bar, 2.5 to 3 bar, and 6.2 bar.
No nozzle material. Two sprayers here specify brass, which is what keeps a
fine mist fine — the orifice is eroded by everything that passes through it, and
plastic widens.
No weight. One sprayer on this shelf publishes under a kilogram for a
five-litre unit, which is a real selling point nobody else here contests.
And the rule for every sprayer on this shelf
One sprayer, one purpose.
Herbicide residue stays in the bottle, the dip tube, the hose and the nozzle.
Rinsing reduces it and does not clear it, and a sprayer that has held weedkiller
will damage whatever it is used on next.
At this price the correct answer is two sprayers and a marker pen.
