Itemised, which is the point
Two listings on this shelf say what is in the box. This is one of them.
That matters more here than on any other accessory shelf, because the same word
covers two products at very different prices:
A wedge alone: a moulded plug that closes the discharge opening.
A kit: that plug and a mulching blade.
The cheapest item on this shelf is a wedge at a sixth of the price of the
dearest kit. Knowing which you are buying is the whole of the comparison, and
five of the seven listings here leave it unstated or describe the wrong object.
What the blade adds
A plug makes clippings recirculate. It does not make them small.
A mulching blade has more cutting edge along its length and a lift profile
shaped to hold material under the deck rather than throw it out. Clippings pass
the edge several times instead of once, and come out fine enough to fall
between the standing grass rather than lying on top of it.
That is the difference between mulching and leaving rows on the lawn.
And what it costs
A deck set up to mulch collects worse.
The airflow that fills a grass box is the same airflow a mulching blade
redirects. Take the plug out and fit the catcher and the machine will still
collect, less well than it did with its original blade.
Most owners who fit a mulching kit stop collecting, and that is the intended
outcome — no stops, no heap, no trips.
