The only self-consistent specification on this shelf
Three figures are published: coverage 90 to 220 m², reach 7 to 17 m
continuously adjustable, and maximum spray width 13 m.
Check them.
17 × 13 = 221 m². The listing claims up to 220.
7 × 13 = 91 m². The listing claims from 90.
Both ends reconcile, which tells you the coverage figure is derived from the
geometry rather than chosen. This is a rectangle 13 metres wide and between 7
and 17 metres long, and the area figures are simply that rectangle multiplied
out.
On a shelf where two impulse sprinklers publish distances in opposite units
without saying so, and three publish areas with no pressure attached, a
specification that can be checked against itself is worth pointing at.
Why an oscillator is a different proposition
Everything else on this shelf waters a circle.
This waters a rectangle: a brass or steel tube full of small nozzles,
swung slowly back and forth by the water itself, throwing a curtain that sweeps
from one end of the lawn to the other.
Lawns are rectangles. A circle inside a rectangle leaves four dry corners; a
rectangle inside a rectangle does not. For a small formal lawn between a house
and a fence, that is the whole argument and it is decisive.
It also means the two figures you need are length and width, not a
radius — and this listing gives both.
What an oscillator costs you
Wind. The water goes up and comes down, and everything that sweeps that
high is at the mercy of a breeze. An impulse head’s flat jet is far less
affected. On a windy site an oscillator waters the fence.
Evaporation. Same reason: a high, fine curtain in midday sun loses more
before it lands. Oscillators want an early morning or an evening.
Reach. The largest area here is 700 m² from an impulse head. This is
220 m². All the water in an oscillator is divided between a row of small
nozzles, so none of it goes very far.
The filter and the needle
Two named parts, and they are the entire maintenance story for this category.
An oscillator’s nozzles are small holes in a tube — often a dozen or more. One
grain of grit blocks one hole, and a blocked hole is a dry stripe running the
full length of the lawn, because that nozzle sweeps the same line every
pass.
An internal metal filter at the inlet is what keeps grit out. A cleaning
needle is what clears the one that got through.
Two sprinklers on this shelf name both. Both are oscillators, and that is not a
coincidence: the failure mode is specific to the type.
The pressure that is not stated
None of these figures carries a pressure.
One sprinkler on this shelf publishes two pressures and two results — 7.3 to
9.8 metres across at 2.8 bar, up to 15 metres at 4.1 — and that near-doubling
is the reason to read every unqualified figure on this shelf as a best case.
A 220 m² rectangle assumes a supply that can push a curtain 17 metres. At the
end of 25 metres of half-inch hose from a modest tap, it will be smaller, and
this listing does not say by how much.
