The two numbers, and what they mean together
The listing publishes a maximum throw of 24 metres and coverage of up to
450 m².
A circle of 24 metres radius is about 1,810 m².
A circle of 12 metres radius — that is, 24 metres across — is about
452 m².
Only the second matches. On this listing, 24 metres is a diameter.
Which makes this shelf impossible to compare on headline numbers
Another impulse sprinkler here publishes 15 metres and 700 m², and a
circle of 15 metres radius is about 707 m². That one is a radius.
So two products in the same category, on the same shelf, use the same kind of
distance figure in opposite senses, and neither says which.
A buyer comparing “24 m” against “15 m” would conclude this is the bigger
sprinkler. On their own published areas it covers 450 m² against 700 m²
— it is the smaller one.
That is not a criticism of either manufacturer’s honesty. Both pairs of figures
are internally consistent. It is a warning about the only two numbers most
people ever read.
The tripod, which is the real reason to buy this
Three folding legs, three ground spikes, and a telescopic column adjustable

Two things follow.
Stability. An impulse head is a hammer — a sprung arm striking into the jet
thousands of times an hour, and every strike is a sideways kick. The ground it
stands on is getting wetter by the minute. A single spike works loose and the
head leans, and a leaning head throws its circle into the hedge. Three spikes
in a triangle resist that.
Height. A sprinkler at lawn level waters the first row of a vegetable plot
and shadows everything behind it. At 97 cm the jet leaves above beans, canes,
currants and most soft fruit. The listing names orchards, and that is the
category this exists for.
30 to 360 degrees
The sector, stepless.
30° is a strip — a row, a border, a hedge line.
180° waters everything in front of a wall and nothing behind it.
360° is the full circle, for a head standing in open ground.
On a tripod that can be lifted and moved in one hand, the sector is what makes
the same sprinkler cover an awkward plot in two or three positions instead of
six.
The adapters
Supplied, and named as making the sprinkler work with all common garden hoses.
Small, and worth mentioning because two other sprinklers on this shelf specify
a thread — one BSP, one to a US standard — and leave the buyer to find the
matching fitting.
And the pressure, which is not stated
450 m² at what pressure, the listing does not say.
One sprinkler on this shelf publishes two pressures and two results, and shows
the throw nearly doubling between 2.8 and 4.1 bar. Another states its area at
8 bar, which is well above a normal domestic tap.
So 450 m² is a best case. A tripod at the end of 25 metres of hose from an
ordinary supply will cover less, and nothing published here says how much
less.
