Up to 247 m², at 8 bar of water pressure, with a 3/4 inch garden hose.
Three conditions on one number, and no other sprinkler here gives more than
one.
Four of the seven products on this shelf publish an area with no pressure at
all. Two publish a pressure. This publishes a pressure and the hose bore.
That is the right way to state it, and it is also why the number should not be
used as a planning figure.
Because 8 bar is not a garden
Eight bar is a strong mains supply. Many domestic taps deliver appreciably
less, and pressure falls further along the hose — which is exactly why the
listing also names a 3/4 inch bore, since a wider hose loses less.
Read against the rest of this shelf, the scale of that matters. One sprinkler
here publishes two pressures with two results: 7.3 to 9.8 metres across at
2.8 bar, up to 15 metres at 4.1 bar. A 45 % pressure increase nearly doubled
the throw, which roughly quadrupled the area.
Extrapolating that to 8 bar is not something this page will do. What can be
said is that 247 m² describes this sprinkler on a strong supply through a fat
hose, and that a half-inch hose from an ordinary tap is a different situation
which nothing published here quantifies.
Seventeen nozzles
The count is the specification on an oscillator.
A swinging tube throws a curtain, and the curtain is made of however many jets
are drilled into the tube. More nozzles means a denser, more even curtain and a
wider watered strip; fewer means stripes.
Seventeen is a high count for this price. The other oscillator on this shelf
does not publish a nozzle count at all, though it does publish its rectangle’s
dimensions — which this one does not.
The three patterns
Full, narrowed and half-side.
Full is the whole rectangle. Narrowed pulls the sweep in for a smaller
plot. Half-side waters one side of the sprinkler only, which is the setting
for a lawn against a wall, a path or a boundary.
Between them they cover most of what an oscillator is asked to do without
moving it, and they are set on the body rather than by adjusting nozzles.
The filter and the pin
Named, and they are the entire maintenance story for an oscillating sprinkler.
Seventeen small holes in a tube are seventeen places a grain of sand can lodge.
And a blocked nozzle on an oscillator is worse than on any other type, because
that hole sweeps the same line every pass — the result is a dry stripe
running the full length of the lawn, which shows up a week later as a brown
band.
A fine metal filter screen at the inlet is what keeps the grit out. A
cleaning pin is for the one that got past.
Both oscillators on this shelf name both parts. None of the five circular
sprinklers here name a cleaning tool, though one names filter discs.
ABS throughout, including the tube and the feet
Stated explicitly, and the detail worth noting is including the spray tube.
Some oscillators use a metal tube for the nozzle bar. ABS is lighter and it
cannot corrode from the inside, which is what eventually enlarges nozzles in a
metal tube in hard water.
The listing’s argument for it is frequent setting up and putting away, which is
the right one: an oscillator gets moved across a lawn several times per
watering, and dropped.
What is missing
A length and a width.
An oscillator waters a rectangle, and the rectangle is what a buyer needs
to match against a lawn. The other oscillator on this shelf publishes 7 to 17
metres by 13 metres, and its area figures check out against those dimensions
exactly.
Here there is an area and no shape, so 247 m² cannot be checked and cannot be
laid over a plan.
